Layne Staley was found dead on Friday April 19, 2002, in his Seattle apartment with heroin paraphernalia. Authorities advised that Staley must have laid dead in the apartment for several weeks before being discovered by a relative. Police advised their will be no further investigation because of a self induced overdose, which will take weeks before an official death certificate is released.
Staley, front man from the grunge scene of Seattle made their mark in music during the early 1990 with the likes of Nirvana, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. Paving a wave for harder rock music during the day when pop was on the charts. It's been now 8 years since the death of another Seattle Rock Legend "Kurt Cobain", departing us with a self inflicted gun death. April seems to be a magic month for Seattle music makers and death. Both taking their lives by weapon or by drug, it's all the same, over excess that could not be managed.
Alice in Chains emerged from Seattle with their debut album "Facelift", which received airplay nationwide, with Staley's vocals and the likes of now solo artist Jerry Cantrell on Roadrunner Records.
The fight with heroin plagued Staley for many years, in and out of rehab he could not kick the habit. Staley spoke of making a come back with Alice in Chains but now they will just live on in Rock History.
