VANS WARPED TOUR 2003 NEWS
ANDREW WK CONFIRMED FOR THIS SUMMER'S
VANS WARPED TOUR 2003
NEW ALBUM DUE OUT SEPTEMBER 2003
New York, NY (May 1, 2003)- Island Records' Andrew WK is currently in the studio recording the follow-up to his critically acclaimed anthemic rock album, I Get Wet. The as-yet-untitled new album is being produced by Andrew and will be released in September 2003. Andrew recently told Alternative Press the new album would be "a bigger thing, more musical." Last year's I Get Wet received incredible praise including 4 stars in Rolling Stone while the Los Angeles Times hailed the album, "...rowdy, good time rock of such forces as KISS, Slade, the early Beastie Boys and the Ramones." Andrew WK will preview songs from his new album on this summer's Vans Warped Tour. Andrew, who performed on a few of the East Coast dates of last summer's Warped Tour, won the crowd over in such a big way with his unbelievable arena-rock style show, that he was invited back as one of this year's headliners. Andrew will perform on all Warped tour dates, which kicks off June 19th in Boise, ID. For a full listing of Andrew WK tour dates visit www.andrewwk.com.
Punk Rock Leaders Team Up To Take Action:
Vans Warped Tour, The Take Action! Tour and the National Hopeline Network--1.800.SUICIDE (784-2433)--are proud to announce their first year collaboration of the Kevin Says Take Action! charity area of THE 2003 VANS Warped Tour
The Vans Warped Tour is an annual punk rock concert drawing over 500,000 energetic young people every year since its inception in 1995. The Take Action! Tour began in 1999 as a way to bring the Sub City concept (combining music, social awareness and fundraising for non profit organizations) to the road. The first Take Action! Tour in 1999 featured such bands as Fifteen, The Weakerthans and Dillinger Four and benefited numerous organizations including Lifebeat, the National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. In 2000, Sub City teamed up with Mike Park and Asian Man records who had also been presenting an annual national tour supporting non profit organizations called Plea For Peace And its predecessor, Ska Against Racism.
The movement to tour for a cause continued to snowball when together the two labels teamed up with the Kristin Brooks Hope Center, The Hopeline Network 1-800-SUICIDE (784-2433). The Hope Center was created and named for the wife of the president and founder, who completed suicide in 1997. The Hope Center is program manager for 1.800.SUICIDE, a national, 24 hour, toll free line, a GLBTQ Outreach program, Preventing Suicide: the National Journal, among other things.
How can the kids Take Action? The Kevin Says Take Action! area--which will be part of the Vans Warped Tour 2003--will be packed with non profit organizations, spoken word, petitions, technology, literature and punk rock music through charity tabling, artist participation and tons of print and verbal outreach. The rockers will be able to put all their energy to good use as they talk to the non-profit representatives from national and regional organizations, learn about future job potentials with non-corporate organizations, try out donated state of the art technology, take photographs, work the web, talk to bands, take depression screening tests and sign petitions. This area allows concertgoers to explore, learn, think critically about the issues that they are faced with and express themselves creatively.
Kevin Says Take Action! provides concertgoers an opportunity and forum to embody and act upon a lot of the ideas expressed in the music they love. The charity area will bring an added positive and proactive experience to the Vans Warped Tour attendee. What could be more exciting than to take all that potent energy, potential, and creativity that fills up each venue at the tour and give a sustainable outlet to those concertgoers who are looking to put the ideals, emotions and politics of the music that they love, to work?
The continuing bond and energy between the three organizations has built the tour to a whole new level reaching hundreds of thousands of people per year with the Hopelines mission that effects so many of the tours fans. The past two Take Action Tours featured such bands as Jimmy Eat World, Thrice, Anti Flag, The (International) Noise Conspiracy, Alkaline Trio and many more. The collaboration is a result of the Vans Warped Tours expanding and morphing to meet the varying interests and needs of the attendees while sustaining its notable spirit of freedom and curiosity.
In the United States, well over 500,000 youth between the ages of 16-24 attempt suicide each year. The concept of Taking Action seems to be quite a popular one with the punk, emo, hardcore music audiences. The responses from the attendees and bands alike were heartfelt and passionate, since suicide, depression and issues of mental health touch everyone. The band members and attendees often agreed that music is a refuge, a therapy, a support system and an outlet. Over 30,000 petitions for mental health parity and improved mental health services were signed by the bands and the concert attendees on this tour with an overall attendance of about 36,000. Attendees had the chance to listen to their favorite bands talk about suicide and depression, talk to counselors at the shows, pick up books and literature, and sign a petition to alert their government representatives to the epidemic of suicide, and then take home one of the Plea for Peace Take Action Tour Volume II enhanced CDs with depression screening tools, a full length QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) suicide prevention training, a list of resources, a full length book, and a toll free number to call night or day.

Through this environmentally conscious effort, the global warming impact of the VANS WARPED TOUR will be offset through the protection of threatened tropical rainforests. The tour will calculate the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by its trucks, busses, power use and fans driving to and from shows. In partnership with Conservation International, a portion of sponsorship fees will be donated to this cause to help protect threatened tropical rainforest with high biodiversity, thus preventing the release of an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. For more information, go to www.conservation.org.
Another tour addition is The Hawk Kids Invasion Tour, featuring twelve top skateboarders hand-picked by legendary pro-skater Tony Hawk. These skaters--revered as the next generation of professionals--will perform demos on their self-contained 70x14 foot skate arena at select shows. In addition, the Balls Of Steel motorcycle stunt show--featuring three motorcycle riders ages 16 and 17 in a steel ball doing wheelies and back flips--returns to the tour after its 2001 debut.
The VANS WARPED TOUR--Americas longest-running touring festival--continues to help break new artists and receive accolades from the media. The 2002 tour was called the summers best bargain by Rolling Stone and was chosen as the Best Concert in the Alternative Press 2002 Readers Poll. The UKs Kerrang! hailed the tour as punk rocks biggest and best tour, while the Hollywood Reporter lauded it as the blueprint of how to run a successful music festival.
Since launching in 1995, WARPED has helped a wide variety of bands break through to the masses, including: AFI, Blink-182, Deftones, Flogging Molly, Good Charlotte, Incubus, Jimmy Eat World, Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit, New Found Glory, Saves The Day, Something Corporate, Sugar Ray, The Ataris, The Donnas, Thursday and many others.
