Symphony X

By Mike Romcoe

The Odessey If you’re ready for some fresh melodic/symphonic heavy metal Symphony X “The Odyssey” has your fix! If your familiar with bands such as Queensryche, Dream Theatre, or Savatage you will want to pick up this red hot CD. Since their release of “V”The New Mythology Suite (2000), Symphony X are keeping busy producing a high energy of melodic imaginative symphonic metal. “The Odyessy”, the bands 9th release since 1999, is packed full of highly technical and creatively aggressive melodic sounds. The New Jersey based band is definitely demonstrating their ability to stay focused using well-blended individual persistence and talent. Mike Romeo, who founded the band in 1994, was absolutely on fire. His heavy, distorted riffs and flying solos were coming down strong, however; I did notice some repetitious-riffs herd in other cuts. This 8-track symphonic adventure includes a 24-minute concept song that follows the epic adventures Odysseus. This is by far, their best work on the cd. “The Odyessy” is worth buying for this track alone. There was a wide mix of material here. This is where band really comes together. The keyboards added an interesting array of melodies and fit well into the arrangements. The rhythm section is strong the bass and the drums are very good in some songs and even better in others. If melodic heavy metal is what your after, then Symphony X ‘s “The Odyessy” is a must have cd that will satisfy your needs.
