Achtung Baby was released in 1991 and it marked U2's transformation from
wholesome saints to bombastic rock stars. This album blew away critics
and fans alike alienating them as well in the process. A sonic boom of an
album from start to finish closing with a somber yet fitting end in 'Love
is Blindness'. Not one weak link in the bunch from the alternative tinged
'Fly' to the mysticism of 'Mysterious Way's' to the now classic ballad
'One'.
The kings of earnest finally let loose with this album and the tour
spectacle of ZOO TV. Like The Beatles and Bowie before them and Radiohead
after, U2 progressed challenging their audience and themselves. They have
yet to surpass it since.
