Blinding Light

By Trent McMartin

The Ascension Attempt The Blinding Light’s blend of screamo-hardcore-metal is not your Sunday school type of metal so it won’t appeal to people who think hard metal is System of a Down, Korn and Linkin Park. The group’s latest offering The Ascension Attempt covers familiar territory with its nihilistic approach and despair filled lyrics that are full of explicit words. Yes we all gather that you’re in pain and full of anguish! And as with many hard metal outfits many of the songs blend into each other rather seamlessly giving untrained fans the inability to know what song they are listening to at any given time.

Fans of metal have always been a curious bunch bordering on obsessive in their allegiance to the genre. This album will have its core listeners usually kids who see the metallic-hardcore genre as a way to let off steam and aggression. Other then that it really won’t make any ripples on the national consciousness or even in the metal community. The Ascension Attempt will satisfy seasoned metal fans but if you’re new to the genre pick up Pantera’s 1992 masterpiece Vulgar Display of Power or Slayer’s 1986 album Reign of Blood.
