Major League (Blue-ray) She's beautiful, smart, goal-oriented, and she just inherited the Cleveland Indians. ;Unfortunately, she wants to move the franchise to Miami, and a losing season is her only ticket to Florida. So she signs the wildest gang of screwballs that ever spit tobacco. They're handsome, but they're hopeless! Her catcher (Tom Berenger) is a washed-up womanizer who struck out in life. Her ace pitcher.
(Charlie Sheen) is a punked-out crazy who struck out with the law. And her third baseman (L.A. Law's Corbin Bernsen) is more concerned fielding endorsements than grounders. Throw in a busload of other misfits and you've got yourself a hilarious line-up that's destined for disaster! Or is it?

With the Cleveland Indians new owner putting together a team of misfit ball players to wind up dead last so she can move the team, they will do everything they can to keep the Indians in Cleveland. This is one of the best sports movies of all time. The fact that it is a comedy doesn't take away from a strong story with genuine characters. There is a love story, there is the feel good aspect of the underdog getting his due, and there is the camaraderie between teammates. This is a recipe for success along with a bunch of laughs along the way. Charlie Sheen is the misguided hotshot pitcher who is nicknamed "Wild Thing" putting him together with Tom Berenger and Wesley Snipes really has an all-star cast and the chemistry they share on-screen has you feeling that they are really teammates and are willing to go to war for each other. The way the team starts to get on a roll and the city gets behind them, is fun to see and has you rooting along with them. Of course, this is a movie from the 80's so there is a happy Hollywood style ending, which I find endearing. I don't care for how somewhere in the 90's the good guys lose or the hero dies. I am a fan of the happy ending and you will feel satisfied long after the game and this movie is over.
Seeing this in the Blu-ray format is a definite upgrade over my original standard DVD copy. While the picture isn't great it is still enjoyable and considerably better. There is some grain and soft spots but, the movie is about 20 years old so I think it is a better than average representation. The audio in Dolby TrueHD is solid but, not what you may be used too with more recent Blu-ray releases. The dialogue is very clear through the center channel with the roars of the crowds in the stadium surrounding you nicely in your rear speakers.
There are a few bonus features that are worth a look but, the movie is where you will get your money's worth.
I can't recommend this movie enough and strongly suggest adding it to your Blu-ray library. |
