Wayne's World (Blue-ray) Based on the Saturday Night Live sketch of the same name, Wayne's World is a wacky, irreverent pop-culture comedy about the adventures of two amiably aimless metal-head friends, Wayne (Mike Myers) and Garth (Dana Carvey). From Wayne's basement, the pair broadcast a talk-show called " Wayne's World" on local public access television. The show comes to the attention of a sleazy network executive (Rob Lowe) who wants to produce a big-budget version of " Wayne's World"—and he also wants Wayne's girlfriend, a rock singer named Cassandra (Tia Carrere). Wayne and Garth have to battle the executive not only to save their show, but also Cassandra. Director Penelope Spheeris, Myers and Carvey hang a lot of silly, but funny, jokes on this thin plot, and the energy of the cast—as well as the wild pop-culture references—make Wayne's World a cut above the average Saturday Night Live spin-off movie.
Wayne ’s World showcases the talents of Mike Meyers and Dana Carvey in this simple comedy that delivers genuine laughs. I grew up watching Wayne’s World on Saturday Night Live and when this movie made it’s way on to the big screen, my friends and I made our way to a crowded theater and shared in the laughs along with the other theatergoers. There is a genuine feel to this movie that just like Wayne’s public access TV show, the comedy is heavily relied on by the banter between Wayne and Garth. I am sure that with cable and satellite TV, you have seen this movie more than once. The thing that really made this special for me on this Blu-ray version was sitting down to watch it from beginning to end rather than flipping through channels and catching it somewhere in the middle. The film has a cleaner look and the colors have a strong rendition without be too saturated. The audio is in Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and while the sound doesn’t immerse you as you may have grown accustomed to with your Blu-ray home theater, the dialogue is clean and the music has a strong punch that will get you rockin’.
The famous Bohemian Rhapsody scene with the car loaded with Wayne and Garth and their friends, really kicks in and will have you head banging along with them.
There really aren’t bonus feature worth mentioning but, there is a bit of an insight into the movie and how certain scenes came about in Extreme Close-Up.
Special Features:
- Commentary with Director Penelope Spheeris
- Extreme Close-Up
- Theatrical Trailer
For me, this movie brings me back to my younger days and the times I spent with friends just like Wayne did with Garth. Also, the lingo like “Party-on” ,“Excellent” , and “Schwing” were some of the greatest pop culture references used in that era. So the decision to upgrade to this Blu-ray format will obviously be whether or not you are a diehard of this franchise. I had a VHS copy so it made sense to upgrade to the Blu-ray. Go ahead and pick up a copy and pull out the photos of when you had a mullet (I hope you don’t anymore) and pop in Wayne’s World for an “Excellent” time.
