The Truman Show [Blu-ray] by Rob Grabowski for UnRated Magazine [January 4, 2008]
The Truman Show The Truman Show [Blu-ray]

He's the star of the show--but he doesn't know. Jim Carrey wowed critics and audiences alike as unwitting Truman Burbank in this marvel of a movie from director Peter Weir (Witness, Dead Poets Society) about a man whose life is a nonstop TV show. Truman doesn't realize that his quaint hometown is a giant studio set run by a visionary producer/director/creator (Ed Harris), that folks living and working there are Hollywood actors, that even his incessantly bubbly wife is a contract player. Gradually, Truman gets wise. And what he does about his discovery will have you laughing, crying and cheering like few film stories ever have.

The Truman Show is an entertaining movie that isn’t the same old Hollywood story and Jim Carrey delivers a very fun and yet serious role as Truman Burbank. He isn’t his usual crazy self in this film, but a very personable and likeable character that you can’t help but feel sorry for having lived his entire life in front of an audience with every person he has ever met being an actor. They even kill his father off and in true soap opera fashion, find a way to bring his character back years later. Carrey’s performance is very heart warming and the performance given by Ed Harris as director Christof is phenomenal. Harris won a Golden Globe for his portrayal and you feel his madness for how passionate he is for his creation of The Truman Show.

The Blu-ray offering has impeccable colors and very tight audio dynamics in Dolby TruHD. The storm on the sea towards the end of the film will have you feeling like you should be running to get an umbrella as the sound envelopes you. There are some bonus features that are worth checking out like deleted scenes and a making of The Truman Show.

Bonus Features:

  • How’s it going to end?: The making of The Truman Show
  • Faux finishing, the visual effects of The Truman Show
  • 4 Deleted scenes
  • Photo gallery
  •  (HD) Trailers – Theatrical & Teaser
  • 2 TV Spots

I really enjoyed this movie. It is very thought provoking and interesting. And if you are a fan of Jim Carreys, this is a nice look at how talented he is when he isn’t being crazy. The character development really is done well and with a strong upgrade from the original DVD offering this Blu-ray is must and I highly recommend it.
