Galaxy Quest by Rob Grabowski for UnRated Magazine [May 27, 2009]
Galaxy Quest Galaxy Quest

By Grabthar’s hammer, the intrepid crew of the NSEA Protector is back in an all-new Deluxe Edition of the classic comedy GALAXY QUEST, arriving in our solar system May 12, 2009 on DVD from Paramount Home Entertainment.  Featuring an out-of-this-world all-star cast including Tim Allen (Wild Hogs), Sigourney Weaver (Baby Mama), Alan Rickman (Sweeney Todd), Tony Shalhoub (“Monk”), Sam Rockwell (Confessions of a Dangerous Mind), Enrico Colantoni (“Just Shoot Me”), Daryl Mitchell (“Ed”) and Justin Long (He’s Just Not That Into You), this rollicking send-up of sci-fi fanaticism is as funny today as it was when it premiered in theaters 10 years ago.

The GALAXY QUEST Deluxe Edition DVD features a stellar array of all-new bonus material including new interviews with the actors and filmmakers discussing how the film came together and what they think of it today; a look at the extraordinarily talented and diverse cast; an exploration of the visual effects created by ILM and Stan Winston; the story of how the mannerisms of the Thermian race evolved; Sigourney Weaver rapping and so much more.

Galaxy Quest still delivers ten years after it’s theatrical release. An obvious play on the world of Star Trek and it’s over the top fans, Galaxy Quest doesn’t poke fun at but embraces the Sci-Fi world with it’s own spin. The actors of the series Galaxy Quest make their living still doing appearances portraying the characters from the series. With the tensions rising among the cast as they learn that the leading man and captain Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen) has booked an appearance without the rest of them. Tim Allen really embodies this character and his portrayal of an aging actor who still relishes in the glory and fame from adoring fans is spot on. When he is woken up by what he believes are fans and thinks he is going to an appearance winds up being a trip out of this world, literally. Upon his return, he goes to his other cast members and tells them about it and wants them to go with him and they don’t believe him. After a few seconds they just think he is referring to another appearance and go along for the ride. This is where they learn that the supposed jobs they used to do on the TV show are now what they must really do to accomplish their mission and save the day.

Without question there are funny scenes and the effects aren’t cheesy but stay true to character and story. I have loved this movie since it came out and always find myself putting it on no matter where it is in the movie if I am flipping channels. This movie always delivers action and excitement. Even after ten years, it still hold up nicely.

I am happy with the restoration of this film and the additions to the bonus features like the deleted scenes. I do wish they had released this movie in Blu-ray as I am sure the world of Sci-Fi would surely embrace the higher quality picture and audio. Maybe we will get lucky and they will decide to offer it in the Blu-ray format with even more features.
