Old School [Blu-ray] by Rob Grabowski for UnRated Magazine [December 26, 2008]
Old School Old School [Blu-ray]

When Mitch (Luke Wilson) returns home early from a business trip, he finds his wife Heidi (Juliette Lewis), about to engage in a ménage à trois with two blindfolded strangers. Mitch decides that he should get a new place to live and rents a house on the local college campus. Two of Mitch's old college buddies, Beanie (Vince Vaughn) and Frank (Will Ferrell) decide that they should throw a party that becomes the biggest party of the year on campus with a special performance by Snoop Dogg. Beanie takes it upon himself to recruit pledges and turn Mitch's place into a frat house. Mitch becomes referred to as "The Godfather" and becomes a local celebrity to men of all ages. With the fun and madness going on at the house, dean Pritchard (Jeremy Piven) becomes angry and tries to do everything in his power to close the frat house down during which the laughs and hilarity ensues.

Old School really delivers as a comedic masterpiece. It is the kind of movie that every time you revisit it you gain something new. Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn, and Will Ferrell are a super trio of comedy and do a superb job giving life to a movie that could have just been another attempt at college humor. The Blu-ray offering has plenty of bonus features to keep the humor and entertainment going for hours after the movie ends.

Bonus Features:

  • "Feature Commentary" with Co-Writer and Director Todd Phillips, Luke Wilson, Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn.
  • "From the Cutting Room Floor" Eight deleted scenes scenes that didn't make it to the film in even the UNRATED cut. These feature Dolby Digital 5.1
  • "Old School Orientation"
  • "Inside the Actor's Studio spoof"
  • Outtakes & Bloopers
  • TV Spots
  • Theatrical Trailer (HD Widescreen 1080i)

The Blu-ray upgrade here is done well although the movie is a bit grainy but overall the flesh tones are quite good and the colors are vibrant. This certainly doesn't take away from the laughs with the audio and visuals delivering an enjoyable cinematic experience.

The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround sound really comes through with the placement of songs throughout the movie conveying the emotion and tone for the scenes. I think this is one of the great movies that should be in every fan's collection. While it isn't a reference quality Blu-ray, and I'm not sure anyone needs to see a naked Will Farrell running down the street in full 1080p, it is certainly an upgrade from the original DVD release and I highly recommend pick it up.
