Dexter: The Complete First Season [Blu-ray] by Rob Grabowski for UnRated Magazine [January 22, 2009]
Dexter: Season 1 Dexter: The Complete First Season [Blu-ray]

Dexter (Michael C. Hall) is a very likeable character whom you would have a hard time believing is a serial killer with his boy next door personality and mild manner demeanor. He hides his lust for killing by working as a forensic blood spatter analyst and working for the police department that would be the same hunting him down should he slip up. This comes into play in season two but, for right now, we will stick with season one and why it works so well. Dexter only kills those who deserve it. So what's wrong with that? He avenges those who have been wronged and for whatever reason they eluded justice and Dexter unleashes his own brand of justice. He learned from his father Harry, who was a police officer, how to hide what the police would use to look for his kind and how to clean up after he kills and basically what needs to be done to not get caught. This appropriately becomes know as "The Code of Harry."

Dexter and the rest of the police department start hunting a serial killer who becomes known as "The Ice Truck Killer". This killer knows who Dexter is and leaves him little clues and taunt's him in a playful way as only serial killers could, Dexter warmly accepts his gestures and wants to play too. This leads to a very intriguing plot and keeps the audience rooting for a serial killer and the police at the same time. Is there such a thing as a good serial killer? Robin Hood stole from the rich and give to the poor so why not have a good serial killer. This Blu-ray offering comes with bonus features although some are only available if your player supports BD Live. As well as being in stunning 1080p, the audio is in Dolby TrueHD. There are some bloody scenes in a hotel room where 1080p really shows off how good Blu-ray can be and the audio is tight and very listenable to the center dialogue channel without being drowned out by the side effect sounds.

BONUS FEATURES:

  • Audio commentary Disc Two: "Return to sender" episode - featuring Jennifer Carpenter, David Zayas, Lauren Velez and Erik King
  • Audio commentary Disc Three: "Born free" episode - featuring Producers Sara Colleton, Clyde Phillips, and Daniel Cerrone
  • BD-Live special features:
    1. The Academy of blood - A killer course
    2. Witnessed in blood - A true murder investigation
    3. Michael C. Hall Podcast
    4. First episode of Dexter, Season 3
    5. First two of United States of Tara

I really am a fan of Dexter and since I don't have Showtime, being able to watch all twelve episodes on Blu-ray DVD is really a treat. Since it is only twelve episodes, it seems like long movie and really keeps the flow and tempo constant. The cast is superb and each character serves an integral part in this series. I strongly recommend this series and would be surprised if you aren't rooting for this very likeable serial killer as strange as that may sound. Just make sure you stay on his good side.
