Dexter: The Complete Second Season Dexter: The Complete Second Season [Blu-ray]

Dexter (Michael C. Hall) is a very likeable character whom you would have a hard time believing is a serial killer with his boy next door personality and mild manner demeanor. He hides his lust for killing by working as a forensic blood spatter analyst and working for the police department that would be the same hunting him down should he slip up. He avenges those who have been wronged and for whatever reason they eluded justice and Dexter unleashes his own brand of justice. He learned from his father Harry, who was a police officer, how to hide what the police would use to look for his kind and how to clean up after he kills and basically what needs to be done to not get caught. This appropriately becomes know as "The Code of Harry."

In season one we learn about the "Ice Truck Killer" and his relationship to Dexter. Season two picks up right where we left off in season one. A couple of scuba divers stumble across trash bags filled with body parts and before Dexter has a chance to catch his breathe from the hoopla around the "Ice Truck Killer" He and the rest of the police along with an FBI task force are called in to find "The Bay Harbor Butcher". If nothing else, the catch phrases are clever and help to establish the killer in question. With the FBI Task force coming in we get a few new characters to compliment the original cast. Also, after Dexter's girlfriend Rita (Julie Benz) questions him about what really happened with her ex-husband, she gets this notion that he is on drugs. Dexter takes the easy way out and agrees that he is on drugs and will get help. He starts going to therapy for drug abuse but somehow he twists what is being applied for drugs to his own vice, which is killing. He then uses therapy to cope with his own demons. He meets a woman at therapy and she proves to be nothing but trouble and Dexter gets caught up in her feminine allure. He now has to see her for her true colors and get himself out of her web of deceit. Along the way we learn more about Dexter's father Harry, his sister Deb, as well as the rest of the supporting players. We do lose a character along the way and I have to say I really enjoyed his role and for me, he will be missed. I don't want to give too much away but I really felt he gave color to compliment Dexter's darkness.

I was fortunate to watch these Blu-ray disks over 3 days and really admit that this series is the perfect length to watch a marathon of episodes. It's not too long and the story flows really well from episode to episode. I really get into these characters and story line and prefer to do the whole season over a few days rather than a few months watching it weekly as it is offered on Showtime.

Seeing the gory scenes in full1080p Blu-ray really isn't for the faint of heart. You will see blood in color and texture that wasn't available till Blu-ray. The colors are extremely strong with deep blacks and definition in the darker areas. The bright sunny Miami days really have beautiful vibrant warmth and set the tone for the exterior scenes. The only thing better than the picture is the Dolby TrueHD audio track. The center channel presents the dialogue at the perfect volume with the surround speakers filling the room with the effects and music. Your subwoofer gets a solid workout too when the excitement and story calls for a bombastic roar. Everything about Dexter follows the "less is more" attitude. Not too many episodes, not too many visual or audio effects, not a too complicated story line, and certainly not too many characters. The flow to this story line is perfect and really has a unique quality that has the serial killer being the good guy.

If you aren't familiar with Dexter I suggest taking a look. I understand that the story line isn't for everyone but, if you can handle the theme, you wont be disappointed.
