Hostel: Part II After seeing Hostel: Part II, the thought occurs that this movie could have easily received an X rating. It is a very gory and sadistic little movie, even more than the first one. The movie was directed by Eli Roth who directed Hostel and the earlier Cabin Fever. I liked Cabin Fever in a so-bad-it's-good kind of way.
Hostel: Part II actually looks pretty damn good. I could imagine somebody playing this on their 60 inch HD TV when it released on DVD (or maybe it already has made it to DVD, it looks like a workprint is already floating around!!). A lot of care was given to the cinematography by Minal Chadima, who also shot the first one. To the movies credit, it takes the time to build characters, but there is never any real payoff to this. The plot is an exact copy of the first movie, so if you had seen that, you could see what was coming a mile away. Except for the gore there are not any real surprises in the movie. This movie might actually be more effective if you haven't seen Hostel . The plot of Hostel: Part II is a rewrite of the first movie, almost an exact copy in fact. There isn't a lot of time spent on violence but what is there is extremely shocking, not in a scary way but more in a sadistic manner. There are a few plot twists here and there but not enough to make the movie anymore interesting. I did not find the movie to be very scary. There is more to making a truly scary movie than just throwing violent images onto the screen. There are a couple of loopholes in the plot that would give the film makers a starting point for Hostel: Part III if they wanted to use them. If you are into gore and just gore, please go buy the ticket. This is not a movie for kids so please leave the teenagers at home this time out, go see Disturbia instead.
