Mirrors [Blu-ray] by Rob Grabowski for UnRated Magazine [January 22, 2009]
Max Payne (Blu-Ray Mirrors [Blu-ray]

Attempting to pick up the shattered pieces of his life, a disgraced former cop (Sutherland) takes a routine security job guarding the charred ruins of the once-famous Mayflower department store in New York. But the terrifying ominous images he sees in the building's ornate mirrors will send him on a pulse-pounding mission to unravel the secrets of the store's past...before they destroy his entire family!

Well I had high expectations of this movie and was really looking forward to a good horror flick but Mirrors didn't deliver. It starts off kind of awkwardly and just throws you into the action and then tries to fill in the blanks and reveal the plot. It doesn't flow well and is very confusing. Afterwards you will still have questions that need to be answered. I think that Kiefer Sutherland does a fine job giving what he had to work with but I believe the whole casting wasn't appropriate. As for scares and such, the only good one takes place in a bathtub. The whole mirrors aspect doesn't even really make sense and is never truly explained.

As for this being a Blu-ray DVD, I was really disappointed with the picture quality. There is a ton of digital noise and the sharpness really isn't there. I have a few Blu-ray movies of older 70's and 80's films that are visually more acceptable for this high def format.

There are bonus features included and some are quite lengthy. There are deleted scenes and an alternate ending that I always find interesting to see what was left out and if it would have helped the film. I will let you be the judge but, I guess there is a reason these scenes hit the cutting room floor.

Bonus Features:

  1. Anna Esseker hospital footage - short
  2. Reflections: The making of Mirrors – 48 minute featurette
  3. Behind the Mirror – 18 minute effects featurette
  4. Animated storyboard sequence – The bathroom scene
  • Deleted scenes and an alternate ending – with optional commentary
  • Bonusview PIP – Mirror Images: Commentary with Director Alexandre Aja and Writer/Producer Gregory Levassuer
  • Unrated and Theatrical versiosns of the film
  • Digital Copy Bonus Disc – A standard definition version of the film that can be downloaded from a compatible PC to a portable playback device
  • D-Box Motion Code

I felt like I had seven years of bad luck for watching this movie and was more confused afterwards than scared. The ending tries to throw you for a loop but, if you are on top of things, you will figure it out. I would suggest skipping this movie unless you really are a gluten for punishment.
