EDITORIAL REVIEW:
Man, I just do not know what to think of Pretty Bird. Not sure if I can get into it or not. I did watch the movie two times probably because of curiosity. I am also glad I did not pay to see this at the show. I'm glad to have watched this flick, I like Paul Giamtti, but I just cannot see paying $10 to see it at the theater. I reserve my cash for blockbuster flicks which can only be experienced on a big screen. Pretty Bird is definitely a at home movie.
To me this movie was a bit dry at times, maybe because I might not be too smart… I just felt I was missing something. I did enjoy the story line and highly believe that it's true. The premise is about some marketing guy who comes up with an idea for a product (our case a rocket belt, James Bond history for you), got someone to back up the money, in this case his friend a successful furniture salesman, and who finds someone to develop the darn thing… in all the marketing guy screws the rest, his friend and the scientist.
I'm not a big fan of salespersons and marketers; they can channel a person but in the end usually provide BS. However, the research and development is always created by someone who works in the background, the guy or gal, which you never hear of including sometimes the patent. But who gets rich, usually the marketing guy. I guess that is life.
That is why I totally got into the role that Paul Giamatti played, a rocket scientist, who for over 20 years invented things for the people who he was employed under. Giamatti is cynical and at times a rude bitter man… at times I feel he has the right. I am totally with him on that… he considers the marketing, idea man, CEO of their company of Fantastic Tech, played by Billy Crudup, a boob, dumb as can be. Giamatti at any given time belittle's the role of Crudup. One scene I loved when he asks him "oh so what college was that you attened?" as silence came upon the scene. But that is where life is, being smart, having an engineering degree at times just don't cut it. But things turn as Giamitte believes he's getting the shaft again and Crudup is trying to steal the product with and start a new independent company with the rocket belt. You have to see this movie, as I'm thinking about it; I guess I liked the flick and have to watch it again. The only thing that killed me at the end of the movie is that it ended to abrupt, I really felt there was no closure.
