Mat Kearney - Preview

Performing in Chicago March 30-31, 2007

by Jackie Lee King

Mat KearneyThe first time Mat Kearney played at the House of Blues in Chicago the audience liked him so much that they threw things at him. You would think that this is usual, but he was opening up for the band Cowboy Mouth; and throwing things is part of the esthetic. A lot has been thrown at the Oregon native who now targets Nashville, TN as his home when he's not on the road. Kearney, a devout Christian, breathes new energy into the singer/songwriter genre by mixing a bit of hip hop in his harmonies. In a relatively short time he has shot into the hearts of Grey's Anatomy fans by having two songs "Nothing Left to Loose", the title track of his current release, and "All I Need" featured on the 2006 season premier of the show. "I got a call from my manager...and it was strange because when the episode aired I got wave after wave of calls from everyone who ever knew me and then the next day I got calls to complain that they missed the episode," Kearney says of his new found notoriety. After the episode aired his life on the road was upgraded from Days Inn's to Marriott Courtyard's, but he still tours ala'van and trailer. Ironically, Kearney wrote the song, "Chicago" in one of those hotel rooms on Valentines Day about his life on the road a few years back. With his current success he isn't hard pressed for company as his shows tend to sell out to young adoring female fans. Currently Kearney is opening up for John Mayer, but is doing a couple of one off dates to strengthen his community ties with audiences around the country; catch him if you can.
