King Kong Oscars 2006

I don’t sense the same buzz around the Oscars as last year. Last year we had the controversial and surprising upset movie “Million Dollar Baby,” which swept the Academy Awards like a tornado and once Morgan Feeman won for “Best Supporting Actor,” I knew it was going quite far but it exceeded my expectations. Let us remember that the public does not vote in the Academy Awards, only the people in the Academy, who look at the Art and Science behind Motion Pictures. So these awards are more technical and artistic rather then what movie goers feel.

This year, however, I feel the Awards Show does not have as much luster as did last year, who knows with John Stewart hosting it could be fun to watch, and I think it has a lot to do with last year’s box office receipts which were way down. The only box office draws will only have a small Oscar hau and films like "the Wedding Crashers" or "40 year old Virgin" don't even get recognized. Heck , “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” has a small but slim chance against “King Kong” for “Art Direction.” Oh yeah, one of my favorite movies last year “Batman Begins” may even beat “Brokeback Mountain” for “Cinematography.” There is hope for a geek like me.

There are only two movies I’ve seen out of all the nominees and only I saw in the theater. I personally would like to see Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix for “Walk the Line” and “Crash” win because these are the two movies, which impressed me the most and the others I had no desire to pay at the box office to see, even with free passes. From a screenwriters point-of-view “Crash” truly deserves the Oscar because the script was a first in screenwriting history by following the arcs (lives) of more characters, which has never been done. My picks are based on my own thoughts as well as on Academy hype and talk.

Best Picture - CRASH

Best Director - George Clooney - GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK

Best Actor - Philip Seymour Hoffman - CAPOTE

Best Actress - Reese Witherspoon - WALK THE LINE

Best Supporting Actor - Paul Giamatti - CINDERELLA MAN

Best Supporting Actress - Rachel Weisz - THE CONSTANT GARDENER
