Open Season IMAX 3-D by James Harper for UnRated Magazine [October 2, 2006]

Open Season Open Season IMAX 3-D

This is the future of the movies. Ever since playing with View-masters when I was a kid I loved 3-D pictures and even bought a 3-D Stereo Realist camera many years ago. I just bought a book last weekend of Escher pictures in 3-D that was published by Barnes and Noble. The IMAX 3-D system uses polarized glasses and the result is stunning. When the title credits appear in Open Season ; they look like they are floating in space. They look completely solid, though you will see shadows if you start to tilt your head to one side or the other. Does the 3-D make the movie a better movie? No, but it is really, really cool. And just like anything else, 3-D can been done very badly or done very well. The 3-D effect for Open Season is quite good and very convincing. The 3-D for The Ant Bully was spectacular, and the movie appeared to me to have been though out in 3-D from the ground up. The 3-D in Superman Returns was a grab for your dollar though I still enjoyed watching the movie with the IMAX sound system. In my neighborhood they kept Superman Returns playing at night while running The Ant Bully only during the day. I thought this was a big mistake. The Nightmare Before Christmas is being release later this month in 3-D, and it is such a great movie anyway. Maybe they will consider doing the original King Kong in 3-D! We live in exciting times (maybe I should get out more). The IMAX ticket is more expensive but worth every penny. This is definitely the way to see this movie. This is the way to LIVE.

Martin Lawrence plays Boog the domesticated bear and Ashton Kutcher plays Elliot the talking deer. The movie is charming and well made, but still seems like a rip off of Shrek . The duo of Lawrence and Kutcher never really jells like a comic duo should. I did not find Kutcher that funny in this particular role though I loved him in “That 70s Show”. The screenplay seems well thought out, and it flows very nicely even though it is not really original in any way. Even with this the movie is harmless, funny enough to hold your attention, and the kids will love it. The chore of matching the mouths of the characters with the voices is extremely well done, almost amazingly so. Even with close-ups of characters heads and considering the fact that you are looking at a 52 foot high screen, the voice and the mouth are matching perfectly. Did they find a new way to do this?
